According to research by an industrial psychologist, Tasha Eurich, 95 per cent people think that they are self-aware but in reality, only 10-15 per cent people are self-aware. Lack of self-awareness can cause problems not only in your growing years but also in your adulthood. For example, Eurich found that lack of self-awareness in the workplace led to increased stress, low motivation and the success rate of any given task decreased by half. Think about what you have read for a moment. Now replace “workplace” with the school. Is it any different?
So, what is this mysterious “self-awareness”?
Self-awareness is simply being acquainted with your emotions and actions very well. It means knowing about how you feel and how your emotions can affect people around you. When you’re self-aware, you can bring out the best in yourself and others.
Self-awareness is a part of the umbrella term of Emotional Intelligence. What is Emotional Intelligence, you may ask? Emotional Intelligence is the ability to use and positively manage your emotions to reduce stress, empathize with people, build stronger relationships and achieve personal and career goals. Emotional Intelligence has five categories.
These are –
Self-Awareness, Self-regulation, Motivation, Empathy and Social Skills.
If you feel that you need to be more self-aware, here are two things that you can do.
Keep a Journal – Keep a journal about the thoughts you’re experiencing can help you become better at being self-aware.
Slow Down – Slow down when you feel that you are experiencing strong emotions such as anger. Irrespective of the scenario, remember that it is in your hands to choose how to react.
Some of the reasons why self-awareness is so important for emotional management are as follows:
• People who are self-aware are more proactive. The more you are self-aware, the better you will be able to accept yourself and this ultimately leads to positive self-development.
• People who are self-aware know how to see things from other people’s perspectives. You tend to have better self-control, you become more productive and work creatively.
• Self-aware people tend to be good with the decision making process.
• The more self-aware you are, the better you will become at communicating your thoughts.
The benefits that we have listed above are enough to start working on self-awareness.
However, there is a way to go about being self-aware. You need to create time and space for yourself too. We are already way too involved with each other’s lives, but unless you make out time for yourself, you won’t be able to understand the importance of being self-aware. You need to connect with yourself daily. Try to avoid digital distractions, and carve out solitude. You need to pay close attention to your inner state. When someone talks, try to pay attention to the speaker and observe their body language and emotions. Never over analysis things and judge people. Self-awareness is an extremely important tool, which can help you become a better version of yourself. Consider working on your self-awareness process. Always remember to help others, you will first have to help yourself.
